4 Costly Mistakes To Watch Out For When Remodelling Your Home
We’ve all been there! When you’re not familiar with this territory, it can be difficult to know when you’re getting a deal or when you’re getting the runaround. And the truth is, no one wants to be living in a half-renovated kitchen for 6 months because they thought they got a bargain (first-time homebuyers, we’re looking at you). Here are 4 of the most common, costly mistakes we’ve seen when our clients are remodelling their homes to sell, or remodelling their newly purchased homes.
1. Not conveying a clear plan for what you want. The contractor can’t read your mind, and if you leave it up to him, you may end up with something you don’t like.
2. Hiring the first contractor you find. The internet makes it super-easy to find testimonials and check references of almost anyone, so do your due diligence to be sure you hire a contractor that’s not only affordable but does quality work, too.
3. Not getting everything in writing. Make sure to include everything in the contract to protect all the parties involved and move things along at an acceptable pace.
4. Not agreeing on a payment plan. A payment plan for paying your contractor is as important as the amount you pay him, so be sure you both agree on the terms. Ensuring your clients know what they're getting into when purchasing a "fixer-upper" is key to client satisfaction. It's also just the right thing to do.
Best of luck on your remodelling journey!
